Hyperhidrosis is a condition that manifests itself as increased localised sweating in the armpits or in the feet and palms. Such sweating exceeds the normal physiological need for thermoregulation. It indicates an excessive response of the sweat glands to normal irritations.
If you suffer from excessive sweating on a regular basis, you may have hyperhidrosis. Injections of botulinum toxin type A are an effective treatment for this condition.
Hyperhidrosis is a pathological condition. Intense perspiration can occur with slight excitement, sometimes even from thoughts alone. Just think of shaking hands – the palms and armpits soon become moist. The secreted sweat triggers fear, which in turn leads to more sweating. A vicious circle is created, which cannot be broken on your own. It seems like such a simple problem, but it can develop into serious psychological disorders such as neurosis, depression, various complexes or often present problems in professional activities – working with keyboard, small instruments, etc. In addition, bacterial or fungal infections can lead to unpleasant odours, skin irritation, dermatitis and other skin diseases. Hyperhidrosis is also associated with a general increase in localised body sweating.
Most cases of hyperhidrosis are idiopathic with an initial localised increase in sweating. Its cause has not yet been identified and is therefore referred to as idiopathic or essential sweating. Its intensity is determined by the amount of acetylcholine in the synapses. This type of sweating can be treated with botulinum toxin injections.
Secondary increased generalised body sweating can also occur and can be due to a wide variety of causes – infectious origin, various endocrine, neurological, systemic diseases. In this case, the diseases causing the sweating should be identified and treated.
BOTULINUM TOXIN A INJECTIONS FOR EXCESSIVE SWEATING TREATMENT
Hyperhidrosis is effectively treated with botulinum toxin type A injections. Botulinum toxin is a protein secreted by Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It blocks the mediator acetylcholine secretion in effectors and, thus, blocks the transmission of nervous impulse to sweat glands. Therefore, sweat glands stop secreting perspiration.
The procedure is safe and can be performed in an outpatient setting. Botulinum toxin is injected into specially marked points on the projection of the sweat glands. The procedure takes 15-20 minutes. The effect appears within 1-3 days, the peak effect is reached after 1-2 weeks after injections and lasts from 6 to 12 months.
