Gynecological ultrasonography is a modern diagnostic technique that is performed using high-frequency waves. With its help, the doctor can identify a number of diseases of the female reproductive system. This study safely, painlessly and accurately displays the state of the organs and surrounding tissues – the cervix and walls of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder.
At Era Esthetic, ultrasound is performed using highly professional equipment in the hands of experienced gynecologists.
Indications for gynecological ultrasonography
Ultrasound is indicated for women who have experienced problems associated with the menstrual cycle. This applies to both irregular and very heavy, scanty and painful menstruation. With the help of ultrasound diagnostics, it is possible to detect congenital or acquired pathologies of the structure of the reproductive organs, prolapse of the uterus, adhesions.
This type of research is also relevant in the following cases:
- problems with the onset of pregnancy;
- suspicion of the presence of formations of various types (tumors, cysts, polyps);
- inflammatory diseases of the reproductive organs (adnexitis, endometritis);
- tracking ovulation and related processes;
- preparation for the IVF procedure;
- identification of the fact of pregnancy, determination of the condition and development of the fetus;
- control of the installation of intrauterine contraceptives or their removal;
- planning of gynecological surgical interventions and monitoring the patient’s condition after their implementation.
Gynecological ultrasound is recommended for prevention purposes at least once a year. The study allows monitoring reproductive health and the condition of the most important organs, to detect the development of dangerous diseases in time and prevent the development of complications.
Contraindications
This type of diagnosis is indicated for women of any age and health status. Gynecological ultrasonography has no contraindications.
There are no restrictions on the frequency of procedures. Ultrasound can be started as often as the doctor needs to make a diagnosis, monitor the progress of treatment, or monitor the condition of the genital organs after procedures or interventions.
What does the diagnostic show?
During the procedure, the specialist examines the cervix and body of the uterus, its appendages. Ultrasonography can provide the following information:
- location, outline, size and shape of organs;
- the structure of the walls of the uterus;
- condition of surrounding tissues.
With the help of ultrasound, inflammatory diseases of the female reproductive organs, benign and malignant formations, their size (volume), shape and structure are diagnosed. As part of the diagnosis, the doctor can establish the presence of endometriosis, fibroids, polyps, cysts. During pregnancy, the study is aimed at monitoring its development and determining the condition of the fetus.
How the procedure is performed?
Gynecological ultrasonography is performed on an outpatient basis. The woman is placed on a couch or chair, with the lower part of her body unclothed. To carry out the study, the doctor needs to access the lower abdomen, pubic area and genitals. During the ultrasound, the patient does not feel any discomfort or pain. The procedure takes no more than 15 minutes.
Ultrasound diagnostics in women can be carried out:
- Transvaginally. It is performed by inserting a special sensor through the vagina. Provides more accurate visualization of organs.
- Transabdominally. It is carried out through the abdominal wall (the doctor guides the sensor in the lower abdomen). The study is carried out when inflammation is detected, which makes transvaginal access difficult, or for girls who are not sexually active.
- Transrectal. It is performed through the rectum. For girls who are not sexually active.
The most informative will be a study conducted on the 7th day of the menstrual cycle. To control the state of the functions of the ovaries, ultrasound is performed several times during the month. Also, diagnostics can be carried out at other times at the discretion of the specialist.
How to prepare for a gynecological ultrasonography?
Proper preparation will ensure that the study is informative.
Before transabdominal diagnosis, the following recommendations should be followed:
- a few days before the procedure, exclude products that contribute to increased gas production (cabbage, legumes, confectionery, fresh bread), alcohol, strong coffee;
- in the presence of constipation, it is advisable to take a microclysm in the morning, before visiting the doctor;
- 4-5 hours before the study, refrain from eating;
- drink 0.5-1 litres of non-carbonated mineral water within 30-50 minutes;
- the procedure is performed with a full bladder.
Preparation for transvaginal ultrasound is almost identical. But keep in mind that the diagnosis is carried out with an empty bladder.
Deciphering the results
After the ultrasound is completed, the doctor issues a conclusion with the results. But it is unacceptable to assess them independently, let alone diagnose yourself and prescribe treatment.. Only a doctor should decipher the results.
To make a diagnosis, the specialist also focuses on other research results (gynecological examination, blood tests, etc.). This allows them to assess the reproductive health of a woman in a comprehensive manner, taking into account all factors.
