WHAT IS SMAS?

SMAS stands for ‘superficial muscular aponeurotic system’: these are the muscles that form the support structure of the face. HOW DOES ULTHERAPY WORK?

During the treatment, the focused ultrasound enters various layers of skin (from the surface and down to the SMAS), with depths of up to 4.5 mm.

By heating individual spots in the tissue at a specific depth, the treatment triggers the production of new collagen and elastin, which can lift the skin of the face, neck and chest and make it denser, and correct the wrinkles.

HOW DOES THE ULTHERAPY® TREATMENT TAKE PLACE?

During the consult, the doctor discusses with the patient their needs, examines the skin, and performs an ultrasound of the tissue to find out if this procedure is appropriate for the patient, to determine the scope of work with the Ulthera System, and to make a prognosis for the results of this procedure.

Ultherapy typically doesn’t require any special preparation, and it is relatively comfortable for the patient. The procedure takes 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the area being treated.

During the procedure, the doctor applies a special gel that conducts ultrasound, then places the handpiece with a special transducer onto the skin in the treated area. As the transducer activates, ultrasound is applied to different layers of skin: from the surface to the SMAS, up to a depth of 4.5 mm, without damaging the skin. With each pulse, the patient feels warmth and a slight tingling sensation.

During the treatment, the doctor controls the effect of the ultrasound on the patient’s skin using the ultrasound visualisation on the screen of the device. This ensures maximum precision and safety, as well as top results of the treatment.
